Roswell

GBA: Episode #15 - New Mexico

Aliens, playing in sand, exploring ruins, carving into rocks. Sounds like New Mexico.

Days 59 - 60

As we drove through Roswell, I felt like an old timer talking about how 'things used to be.' A few years ago, I had been to Roswell, and wanted to show Kim some of the weird things that made me laugh the last time I was there (2003). The creepy Denny's (yes, creepier than the normal Denny's. We're talking Roswell, here) was no longer a Denny's, but a deserted dump. A UFO museum that was once free and gave you a complimentary bumper sticker now costs $5 to get in, and most of the cool displays in there are either gone, or out of reach so you can't even get a picture of it. Just about everything in Roswell had changed for the worse, until we saw one store that was open.

To be honest, I don't even remember the name of this store. We were really just trying to find another alien display to have Kim take a picture next to, when I caught a few photos that were pinned on the wall. This place had taken the time to make all of these normal and abnormal situations involving aliens that you could take a picture with. So, for a mere $2 we got to take some ridiculously stupid photos with aliens. To me, it was money well spent. I think Kim would have rather taken the $4 to buy more butane for our stoves to cook food. Food is way overrated, though. You eat every stinkin day. How often to you take pictures with aliens? With Kim in the happiest of moods, we journeyed over to Bottomless Lake State Park.

Would being able to see the bottom fall under false advertisement? Probably not, but for only $14, we were able to get showers, electricity, water, and large gusts of wind. We arrived early afternoon, but it was actually too windy to do much of anything (Lucky for you, that meant I got cooped up inside the bus and was able to edit 2 videos. They'll be up shortly.). We popped the top, and were actually worried at one point that the wind would be too strong and tear the canvas. Well, I was worried. Kim thought the bus might tip completely over. The next morning wasn't as bad with the wind.

Since mother nature lost her breath and couldn't make our lives crappy anymore, we got to hike around the park. There were 'lakes' everywhere. Most of these man made phenomena were actually smaller than Kim's pond at her cabin. Size aside, they were extremely vivid in color, much like the skies out here. If I had a terrible time finding my bearings or understanding which was up or down, I'd swear that the skies were the oceans. Maybe I wouldn't, but it is very very blue out here. After checkout, we drove for a bit.

Currently our residence is in Alamogordo, NM. I know I had done something here once as well, but I'm afraid to wrack my brain and try to figure out what it was. I fear that if I suggest we do something again in New Mexico because I saw it once years ago, it'll turn out to be as fun as chasing Westy through heavy traffic. Tomorrow's destination: White Sands National Monument.
